Vermont Suicide Prevention Advocacy Day February 28, 2022

Vermont, February 28th, 2022 – Please join the Vermont Suicide Prevention Coalition (The Coalition) as they present to the Vermont legislature. The sessions will increase knowledge about needs and recommended strategies for suicide prevention in Vermont, and highlight the importance of the contents of S.69. Click here to view S.69 as introduced. The sessions are open to legislators and anyone who wishes to learn more about best practices for suicide prevention. 

Suicide is a leading public health problem in Vermont and the 8th leading cause of death in the state. Vermont ranks 21st highest in the nation for rates of suicide with an average of 2-3 residents lost to suicide every week with 82% of suicide deaths occurring in rural communities.

Featured speakers will address the following topics: suicide as a public health issue, the critical role of the mental health workforce, why means reduction strategies matter, the importance of lifelines and the 988 crisis line, and barriers to mental health care from those with lived experience. 

The first session, Decreasing Suicide as Part of a Public Health Approach, will run from 9-9:45 am, and the second session, Barriers to Mental Health Care from Those with Lived Experience, will run from 10-10:4 5am. We have all experienced another difficult year with a continuation of unexpected changes to daily life. Vermonters continue to experience social isolation, economic stress, negative health impacts, and mental health challenges. Now is the time for prevention!
